REDCOATS 31st NATIONAL SOFTBALL YOUTHS CHAMPIONS
After clinching the best-of-7 Softball Championship series on Thursday, Redcoats 31st became the first ever MABS Youths Softball Fastpitch National Champions winning 4 games and losing 2 against Redcoats 63rd. This was a first for Malta where players, rather than coaches, pitch during a youths’ softball game. This experience can be deemed as a success especially considering the improvement of the pitchers over the 6-game series.
Club captain, Kacey Grima, won 3 games as a pitcher for Redcoats 31st, whereas assistant captain, Giulia Lateo, won 2 games and lost 2 for Redcoats 63rd. Both senior pitchers showed much potential as did Yana Vella, Jasmine Bonnici and Estelle Scicluna who all featured as pitchers in at least 4 games.
Special praise is due to the two catchers of the respective teams, Alicia Said and Kirsty Bonnici who showed much dedication and put on hard work trying to help their pitchers out.
GIULIA LATEO PITCHES A GEM
Redcoats 63rd pitcher, Giulia Lateo, earlier today had a fabulous outing for her team going 4 innings striking out 10 of the 19 batters she faced. Lateo conceded just 2 runs to win the game 8-2 for Redcoats 63rd and even her record as pitcher at 2 wins and 2 losses. It took a great performance to secure just the second win in six games for Redcoats 63rd against Redcoats 31st.
Congratulations to both sets of players for the exciting series and the improvement exhibited over the six games.
Redcoats 31st, who clinched the first ever MABS Youths Fastpitch National Championship on Thursday, struggled in the early innings. Estelle Scicluna did not manage to replicate the form exhibited in her previous outing when she won the game that clinched the series and the National Championship. In game 6, Estelle took the loss to move to 1 win and 2 losses for the season. Kacey Grima came in relief and did very well striking out 4 of the 12 batters faced to concede 2 runs.
Malta Baseball & Softball Association President, Mr Mario Debono, was in attendance and was encouraged by the performance of the pitchers of both teams. After the game, Mr Debono presented Kacey Grima, captain of Redcoats 31st the trophy as National Youths Fastpitch Softball Champions 2013/14. The other players of Redcoats 31st, Kirsty Bonnici, Estelle Scicluna, Kurt Fenech, Denise Xuereb, Angelo Muscat, Miguela Xuereb, Roselle Azzopardi, Ryan Grech, and Maria Grima also received winners’ medals.
Congratulations to both sets of players for the exciting series and the improvement exhibited over the six games.
