The Redcoats senior team won their season opener today in Mellieha when they beat league-favorites Mellieha Softball 9-4. This was a very good performance in terms of fielding as well as hitting for the Redcoats who took an early lead and kept adding to it. The score was 9-1 by the middle of the 6th inning and the Redcoats didn’t look like they were going to let Mellieha back into the game in their last at-bats. Mellieha still managed to score a further run in the 6th and two runs in the bottom of the 7th for a 9-4 final score.
This can be considered a very good return for the Redcoats who were missing several key players from last season.
In the second game of the double header the Redcoats lost 3-10 as Mellieha made some important changes with Keith Bartolo and Daniel Newman inserted in their starting line-up. The Redcoats let down their guard as well and committed several uncharacteristic errors. Mellieha Softball scored 4 runs in the 1st inning with 2-run home runs from Clint Grima and Daniel Newman and then added another 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to open a 10 run lead.
This can be considered a very good return for the Redcoats who were missing several key players from last season. Mark Buttigieg, Bryan Attard and Emmanuel Borg made their debut for the Redcoats, whereas Michelle Grima, who plays at 1st base for the ladies team, also made her debut for the senior slow-pitch softball team.
Home runs from Josef Vella, and Charles Attard (2), a 3-for-4 2nd game for Mark Buttigieg, as well as timely hits from Steven Galea accounted for most of the offence for the Redcoats. Pitcher Loreto Scicluna had a very good outing striking out 9 batters, a career high. This performance augurs well for the Redcoats for the rest of the season.
