A heavy trophy was selected to be presented to the winners of the tournament so that no one player would be able to lift the cup without help from teammates, as since softball is a team sport, it requires a team effort to win.
The 31st Athletics won the Gozo Cup Softball Tournament 2014. They beat the Leinster Royals 4-0 in the Playoff and then went on to defeat the Connaught Rangers 14-8 in the Cup Final. In both games the Athletics played extremely well and were more focused and determined than their opponents. Superior fielding and excellent hitting were needed to win both games. On the day they were clearly the better team and as a result worthy winners.
Before the medal and trophy presentations, Joseph Scicluna of the Ghajnsielem Redcoats, congratulated all the participants for their excellent showing during the three week long tournament. He went on to thank all the players and their coaches as well as the main sponsors of the tournament, Jesmond Mizzi Financial Advisors Ltd. Mr Jesmond Mizzi remarked on how entertaining the Cup Final turned out to be and was amazed at the team spirit of the finalists. He indicated that it is the policy of his company to sponsor such sporting events particularly those events which encourage youngsters to participate in sporting activities. Mr Mizzi then presented bronze medals to the players of the Leinster Royals for placing third. The Connaught Rangers received silver medals along with a runners-up trophy.
The coaches of the three teams selected Estelle Scicluna as the tournament Most Valuable Player. She was outstanding throughout the tournament and led all players in most of the offensive and defensive statistics. In the Playoff and the Cup Final she was the driving force behind the two excellent performances of her team. Estelle was presented with the trophy for the Gozo Cup 2014 – Tournament Most Valuable Player by Mr Mizzi.
Gold medals were also presented to the cup winners, 31st Athletics. Gianella Mallia and Estelle Scicluna, co-captains of the Athletics, were then presented with the prestigious Gozo Cup which together they lifted to the cheers of their team mates.
