The Redcoats boast the strongest pitching staff in Malta at the U/14 level.
Earlier this afternoon, the Ghajnsielem Redcoats registered a fine victory in the MABS Youth Baseball Major League against the Blue Jays in Mellieha. The game was tied at 1-1 in the top of the third inning when Ian Refalo hit a 3-run home run to give the Redcoats a 4-1 lead. The Redcoats dominated from that point onwards to win the game 7-2.
However, the pitchers were the major story of the game. Starting pitcher Kurt Fenech, although pitching for the first time this season, was very good, striking out one of the five batters he faced. Ian Refalo, who pitched the bottom of the 2nd inning, did very well too. He was the pitcher of record registering his first career victory. Estelle Scicluna pitched two strong innings striking out four batters and giving up one unearned run. Closing pitcher Gerrard Xuereb made up for the shaky outing the previous weekend with a very good performance. Gerrard struck out three consecutive batters with the bases loaded to end the game and secure the win for the Redcoats. One can say that with the four pitchers that did such a wonderful job today along with Denis Xuereb, who was missing due to family commitments, the Redcoats boast the strongest pitching staff in Malta at the U/14 level.
The final game of the season is scheduled for next Sunday, May 24, at the Gozo Stadium, starting at 13:45 against Verdala.
