Company CEO, Mr Jesmond Mizzi, said that his company is honoured to be associated with clubs such as the Ghajnsielem Redcoats who strive to increase the rate of female participation in sports
Jesmond Mizzi Financial Advisors Ltd is supporting the efforts of the Ghajnsielem Redcoats to improve gender equality in sports with an annual sponsorship. This is the fourth year that the Company, one of the leaders in the financial services industry in Malta, has joined up with the Redcoats to help increase the opportunities for girls and women to play a sport.
The Redcoats were set up as a softball club in 2012 with the main objective to provide opportunities for girls and women to practice a sport. The Redcoats have since evolved into a sports club and are one of the biggest sports academies in Gozo. Last year the club became the first organisation in Malta to secure a grant for an Erasmus+ Sports: Small Collaborative Partnerships project called Inclusion & Gender Equality Through Softball (IGETS) with partners from the Netherlands and Croatia. The two-year project has among its main objectives efforts to increase awareness with policy makers about the implications of their decisions on gender imbalances in sports, to increase the opportunities for women to be active, to exchange best practices relevant to club administration, and to build capacity in coaching softball.
The Redcoats are also involved in the Softball in Schools initiative in collaboration with the Ministry for Education & Employment through the Education Department, with the World Baseball & Softball Confederation, USA Softball and Scrap Yard Dawgs of Houston, Texas, as the main sponsors. Though this initiative, PE teachers from Malta and Gozo are receiving softball coaching courses from US coaches so that they can teach softball in primary schools. This initiative is intended to increase the rate of participation of girls in sports. An inter-school softball festival is scheduled for the end of the scholastic year.
The Club currently has two teams participating in the Women’s Fastpitch Softball Tournament organised by the Malta Baseball & Softball Association with one of the teams currently in first place with 5 wins and 1 loss. The Redcoats are participating with two teams in order to give the opportunity to more female athletes to play softball at national level. The Club has over 130 athletes aged 4 years and older participating in its sports programs which include baseball, softball, and basketball along with two multi-sports programs.
During the presentation of the sponsorship held at the offices of JMFA in Hamrun, CEO Mr Jesmond Mizzi, said that his Company is honoured to be associated with clubs such as the Ghajnsielem Redcoats who strive to increase the rate of female participation in sports.
