The objective of the programme is to introduce the playing rules of each sport while learning the fundamental sports skills of each discipline
On Thursday, May 24, the Ghajnsielem Redcoats held the final session of the Fundamental Skills Academy (FSA) programme. As with Active Start, this was the best year on record in terms of enrolments and average attendance for the FSA. There were 17 boys and girls enrolled with an average attendance of 13 per session.
Coaches Clifford Debattista and Mario Mercieca (rugby), Ruben Mercieca (basketball & football), and Maria Angela Caruana (volleyball) did an amazing job with this group as the attendances demonstrate. A 90 minute session was held every Thursday at the Ghajnsielem Primary School with 45min dedicated to a particular sport. For the first half of the season basketball and rugby were practiced during each session. During the second half it was the turn of football and volleyball. The objective of the programme is to introduce the playing rules of each sport while learning the fundamental sports skills of each discipline.
During the final session there were three 30 min games; basketball, football and volleyball. The basketball game was important as preparation for the meet with Starlites scheduled for that following Saturday. Six of the players who attend FSA accepted the invitation to play against the U10s and U8s of Starlites Basketball. This was be the first time that they participated in a basketball game.
At the end of the session coaches Ruben Mercieca and Maria Angela Caruana gave participation certificates to each of the players. The Redcoats would like to thank the five coaches for their dedication, the young participants for their behaviour, and the parents for entrusting their children to the club and for their continuous support.
