The Club is making every effort to promote SIZZLING FASTPITCH with the sporting community of the island, as well as with those who love baseball and softball in Malta
The Għajnsielem Redcoats are currently working on the final preparations to host SIZZLING FASTPITCH, an international tournament for U18 softball teams. This tournament received financing support from the Ministry for Gozo through the MGOZ Promotion of Sports Initiatives and Facilities 2018 scheme. This is going to be the first time ever that an international youth softball tournament will be organised on the island.
Sparks Haarlem, one of the top softball clubs in the Netherlands, along with BC The Herons, also from the Netherlands, will be travelling to Gozo to compete in the tournament against the U18 softball team of the Redcoats. Hon. Dr Justyne Caruana will inaugurate SIZZLING FASTPITCH during the opening ceremony on Saturday, August 17, at the Għajnsielem Ground. A mini-tournament of baseball5 will then take place between the players of the three clubs who will be drafted into four teams. This fun activity is intended to help the players from the three teams to get to know each other, while at the same time introducing baseball5 to Gozo as a physical activity that doesn’t require any equipment except a tennis sized ball.
The competition will start on Sunday afternoon with the first game to feature the two Dutch teams who will take on each other. This will be followed by another game as the Redcoats will face the tournament favourites, Sparks Haarlem. There will be six games in all, with the last two games and the closing ceremony will take place on Wednesday, August 21. All the games will be played at the Kercem Stadium as per the schedule below.
This tournament will represent another stern test for the softball team of the Redcoats. The Netherlands are currently ranked second in softball in Europe, and both teams have been doing well in their domestic league. The experience gained during the five games played during the XXXIV Memorial Civelli Tournament will come in handy for the players as they will try their best to end the season on a high note.
The Club is making every effort to promote SIZZLING FASTPITCH with the sporting community of the island, as well as with those who love baseball and softball in Malta. Another objective of this tournament is to increase the popularity of softball in Malta and Gozo.
The Malta Baseball & Softball Association will be supporting the tournament by providing two umpires for each game.
This initiative has been supported by the Ministry for Gozo Sport Organisations Assistance Scheme, a funding programme for Sport Organisations on the Island of Gozo.
