What a day for the young Redcoats as they volunteered to spend the morning showing their fellow Form 2 students of the Agius de Soldanis Girls Secondary School, Gozo College, the essential techniques involved in playing softball. Over fifty students had an opportunity to experience first hand batting, fielding and base running with the members of the U/15 Redcoats squad acting as coaches. The session started at 9am and lasted for about an hour.

Steve Sexton, Malta Baseball and Softball Association PRO, and Loreto Scicluna, along with PE teachers Marlene Saliba and Gin Eve Refalo assisted in the training session.

After the practice session the students turned into spectators as the Redcoats played for the first ever edition of the NGOs Sports Shield. This is an invitational challenge final organised by the Gozo NGO Centre to celebrate International Volunteer Day.

Gozo NGOs Association Secretary, Mr Ryan Mercieca, threw the ceremonial 1st pitch to Redcoats 63rd captain and pitcher, Giulia Lateo. Redcoats 63rd hosted Redcoats 31st for this softball game with the chance to become the first winner of the NGOs Sports Shield. Redcoats 31st edged out their fellow squad members scoring 3 runs in the top of the 6th inning to win 4-1.

After the game, Chev Carmel Zammit, President of the Gozo NGOs Association, congratulated both teams and remarked how nostalgic it was to watch the girls and boys play softball as it reminded him of when he was young and played rounders at school. Mr Eman Borg, Vice Secretary of the Association and Sports Group Coordinator, then presented Kacey Grima, Redcoats squad Captain, with the NGOs Sports Shield.  Mr Marc Schembri, PRO of the Association, was also present during the presentation of the shield.
