This morning our two youth teams were involved in the celebrations of International Volunteer Day organised by the Gozo NGOs Association at the Kercem Ground. After conducting a practice session for their fellow students from the Agius de Soldanis Girls Secondary School, Gozo College, Redcoats 31st and Redcoats 63rd battled it out for the first edition of the NGOs Sports Shield, an invitational final.
After the game Redcoats captain, Kacey Grima, was presented with the NGOs Sports Shield by Mr Eman Borg, Vice Secretary and Sports Group Coordinator of the Gozo NGOs Association.
Redcoats 31st took the lead as Kurt Fenech scored on a base hit by Roselle Azzopardi in the top of the second inning. Redcoats 63rd evened the score in the bottom of the same inning as Corrine Zahra, playing her first official game, drove in Rebecca Grech.
The score remained at 1-1 until the top of the 6th inning when following several fielding errors Redcoats 31st scored 3 runs to take the lead for good. Redcoats 63rd had 2 runners on with nobody out in the bottom of the 6th but did not manage to get any runs home and the final score remained 4-1 in favour of Redcoats 31st.

For this occasion the Ghajnsielem Redcoats’ youth teams had numbers on the back of their shirts for the first time. Starting in September 2014, the Malta Baseball and Softball Association will be enforcing the rules that request that team uniforms have numbers on the back of shirts. The Redcoats welcomed this development and in an effort to conform with the Association’s regulations decided not to wait till the end of the season to have white numbers printed on the red ‘coats’ that have since October 2012 been associated with our teams.
The club also made a significant investment and purchased a new set of white jerseys so that the youth teams would have an alternate shirt. For the Softball Championship Series the home team will be wearing white shirts whereas the road (away) team will wear the red shirts. The white shirts had the new logo of the club attached to it. Along with the shirts each player received a slick-style cap also with the new logo attached to it. The logo is attached left of center which is uncharacteristic for baseball or softball team caps. This design along with the numbers and logo was very much welcome and appreciated by all the players who see themselves as trend setters. Both the white jersey and the cap along with the printing of the numbers was the club’s (early) Christmas present to the players.
