AUTUMN ON THE RUN 2011

The Local Council’s resolve to increase the involvement of girls in sports made this programme happen by financing the purchase of most of the softball equipment required.

Ghajnsielem Mayor, Mr Francis Cauchi, along with his fellow council members, expressed their determination to address the problem of lack of interest from girls to participate in sporting activities.

It was specifically for this reason that Ghajnsielem FIT4LIFE in collaboration with the Ghajnsielem Local Council launched Autumn on the Run 2011, for girls 10 to 14 years old. The Local Council’s resolve to increase the involvement of girls in sports made this programme happen by financing the purchase of most of the softball equipment required to be able to play the game and by covering the expenses associated with the practice sessions.

The game of softball was selected for the reason that overseas, especially in North America this game is very popular with girls of all ages. In addition, softball is a non-contact sport and can be played by anyone irrespective of weight, height or size.

The introductory softball training program commenced on the 6th of November 2011. The 12-session program was held at the Nadur Ground. Nineteen girls participated in the program conducted by coaches Joseph Scicluna, Loreto Scicluna and Frank Buttigieg. During this program, the girls, who were playing this sport for the first time, managed to improve considerably the various skills required to perform well in the game.

However, it was the positive attitude and the excellent behaviour of the girls who participated which gave the coaches the greatest satisfaction. This success prompted the Ghajnsielem Local Council to continue its support for Girls Softball Training Camp – Winter 2012 and then Spring Training 2012.
