RECAP

The Ghajnsielem Redcoats beat the Mustangs 3-0 in Marsa today to claim a famous and historic victory at the Marsa Sports Grounds. The was the first game for the Redcoats in the MABS Youths Softball Minor League.

The game was characterised by excellent fielding by both teams and the encounter remained scoreless until the late innings. The Redcoats, however, always looked like the team most likely to score as they managed to get runners in scoring position almost during every inning. Twice they came very close to score having runners thrown out at home plate. The Redcoats were not to be denied, however. They held their nerves and came up with key hits when it mattered.

In the top of the 5th inning, with runners on 1st and 2nd, Estelle Scicluna hit a ball hard down the left field line to score Malcolm Refalo from 2nd for the go-ahead run. This was immediately followed by another important hit by Jasmine Bonnici to drive in her sister, Kirsty Bonnici, from 3rd.

2-0 for the Redcoats!

In the bottom of the 5th inning the Ghajnsielem Redcoats disposed of the heart of the Mustangs’ batting order without much difficulty. The Redcoats were keen to add to their lead and in the top of the 6th Giulia Lateo, who had been smashing the ball all day right at Mustangs, decided to try something different and came up big. Giulia had a base hit to drive home Kelly Buttigieg, who was playing her first game ever, from 3rd base. 3-0!

The bottom of the 6th was the last chance for the Mustangs to make an impact on the game. The Redcoats showed much maturity and were incredibly efficient to get the 3 outs they needed to register this shock victory on the opening day of the season. Well done!
