RECAP

Redcoats Baseball rediscovered their form with an emphatic win over the Mellieħa Blue Jays. This was the Redcoats’ first road win. It is also the first time that a team from Għajnsielem has won a game on official Maltese soil. The batters, led by Massimo Mallia, provided the platform for the win and the fielders prevented the Blue Jays from gaining any foothold in this game.

Redcoats Baseball made a great start when the left-handed, power hitter Massimo Mallia slugged a three run homer in the top of the first after Malcolm Refalo (single) and Armando Xuereb (ground rule double) had led off with hits. Exploiting the Redcoats’ only poor inning on the field, the Blue Jays responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. The Redcoats were retired in order in the top of the second. The Blue Jays had a chance to level matters in the bottom of the second when they led off with a hit. Three consecutive outs, however, meant that the Redcoats stayed in front. In the top of the third, Armando Xuereb and Kirsty Bonnici reached base. Massimo Mallia drove Xuereb home with a base hit. After Ian Refalo loaded the base, both Bonnici and Mallia scored on Gerrard Xuereb’s fielder’s choice. The Blue Jays were retired in order in the bottom of the third. Buoyed by their defence, the Redcaots scored three more in the fourth. Malcolm Refalo doubled with one out and was driven home by an Armando Xuereb double. The latter scored on Mallia’s two-out double. Mallia crossed the plate following Ian Refalo’s base hit. The Blue Jays’ poor afternoon continued when the side struck out in the bottom of the fourth. The Redcoats added a run in their last at-bat. Lead-off hitter Wayne Xuereb reached safely and came home following Malcolm Refalo’s third hit of the afternoon and Armando Xuereb’s RBI single. The Blue Jays threatened to mount an uprising in the bottom of the fifth when they loaded the bases with one out. Two consecutive outs, however, meant that the Redcoats would win the game 10-2.
