RECAP

Redcoats Baseball registered an 8-0 shutout, their first ever, over the Mellieħa Grand Slammers in a M.A.B.S. Youths minor league baseball game played at the Gozo Stadium. Redcoats Baseball dominated the game on the field with a series of spectacular plays and with the bat.

The game started well for the Grand Slammers with the first two batters reaching base. Then, in a sign of things to come, Massimo Mallia caught a fly ball and turned it into an unassisted triple play. Mallia drove what would be the winning run in the bottom of the inning with a two-out double, which scored Malcolm Refalo. Ian Refalo drove Mallia in with another RBI double. The two sides went down in order in the second inning. While the Grand Slammers again went down in order in the top of the third, the Redcoats blew the game wide open with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Kirsty Bonnici bagged two RBI’s when she drove Malcolm Refalo and Armando Xuereb home with nobody out. Mallia reached base with the fourth consecutive hit in the inning. Then with two outs, Wayne Hili drove two runners in before he was caught in a rundown to end the inning.

In the top of the fourth, the Redcoats again faced the minimum three batters. This time by turning a double play with a man on second and nobody out. Shortstop Malcolm Refalo caught a low line drive then tagged the runner who had strayed off second base. The Redcoats made sure of the win with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Malcolm Refalo and Armando Xuereb reached base with two-out hits. Then Kirsty Bonnici drove them home with a base hit. The Redcoats were now keen on preserving the shutout and they did so again in spectacular fashion. This time Gerrard Xuereb raced towards the infield from right field to catch a shallow fly ball. The ball bounced off the edge of his glove and towards 1st baseman Mallia who was also hustling to make the play. With good reflexes Mallia grabbed the ball in mid-air to register the out. After another hit, the last Grand Slammer batter struck out to end the game.
