RECAP
Following last weekend’s resounding victory against Mellieha by a score of 14-0 as well as the commanding performance against the Luxol Mustangs to win 5-0, the Ghajnsielem Redcoats were a victory away from claiming their first ever Youth Softball League. They had to beat Verdala International, the up and coming softball and baseball team, in Marsa.
Verdala International played a very good game with their fielders showing much promise. They were also hitting the ball very well and managed to score 2 runs. These were the only runs that the Redcoats conceded in the league. The Redcoats had to be on top of their game to avoid a major upset.
The Redcoats started off well scoring 4 runs in the 1st and again in the 3rd inning. They put together 26 base hits including several doubles and an inside-the-park home run by Ian Refalo, who once again was a key performer along with Brandon Grech, Gerrard Xuereb and Estelle Scicluna. At the end, the Redcoats were comfortable 15-2 winners. The score-line reflects their superiority throughout the game. They were deserved winners and worthy national champions.
For the second season in a row the Redcoats managed to claim a National Championship. Last year it was the MABS Youth Baseball Major League and this season it was the MABS Youth Softball Minor League. With so many young players coming through the system for the Redcoats the future looks bright. Preparations will now start for the Baseball Division organised by the Gozo Baseball & Softball League which is scheduled to start on Saturday, March 28. The schedule will be announced soon.
