RECAP
Reigning MABS Youth Softball Minor League Champions, Luxol Mustangs, came to Gozo in search for their second victory of the season in their quest to claim their third consecutive youth softball national title. In their way stood a well-prepared Ghajnsielem Redcoats team determined to go one better than the previous two seasons and claim the Club’s first ever youth softball league.
The encounter proved to be a very tight affair with both teams demonstrating their excellent fielding ability. It was only in the bottom of the 4th inning that the Redcoats managed to make their superiority count. A well hit single by Gerrard Xuereb followed by a ground-rule double that was just a meter short of the home run boundary, brought Denise Xuereb to bat. Denise is no stranger to this situation. She was the one to hit the ball into left field with two outs and two strikes on to drive home the winning run for a memorable walk-off victory and the first ever win for the all-girls Redcoats softball team back in November 2012. Yet again, Denise did not disappoint and she came through with a base hit to drive home Gerrard Xuereb from 3rd base. Brandon Grech and Rebecca Grech followed with consecutive singles to bat in a run each putting the Redcoats up by three runs after four innings.
The Redcoats now had a lead to protect and they were in no mood to give it up. Although the Luxol Mustangs managed to get their lead off hitter on to start the top of the 5th inning their next three hitters were retired without much trouble. The Redcoats did manage to pad their lead in the bottom of the 5th thanks to a triple by Ian Refalo with Estelle Scicluna scoring from 1st base. Ian also scored following a throwing error to home to make the score 5-0 for the Redcoats. In the top of the 6th and final inning Brandon Grech made the catch of the day running in from centre field and sliding to catch a pop-up just beyond 2nd base for the second out. Kurt Fenech made the final out of the game.
With these two fine victories against direct rivals for the national championship the Redcoats are now firm favourites to win the MABS Youth Softball Minor League. A victories against Verdala next Saturday in Marsa will bring to Gozo the first ever MABS Youths Softball League.
